Zumba Basics

As long as you’re good on your feet, Zumba® dancing is the easiest form of workout – even more so than the basics. To master the Zubma ® dance steps, you have to undergo three stages:

  • Step 1 - Walk through the moves
  • Step 2 - Add either the arms, hips or upward movement – staying in tune with the momentum
  • Step 3 – This is a combination of steps 1 and 2 – staying in sync with the music

Once you have the basic Zumba ® steps down, you can then add your own twist to it. It’s all about moving your body, getting your heart rate up and having a great time throughout it all!

Before Getting Started

  • Don comfortable clothes which allow the air to pass through and draw off the sweat
  • You can also start off with a couple of layers on too, such as a sweatshirt or a jacket
  • Shed one or two layers as you warm up
  • Wear appropriate footwear
  • Cross-trainers and aerobic dance shoes are ideal
  • Running shoes are not a good option since they have very strong adhesive friction

Remain Joyful

If you’re opting for a Zumba® class, get yourself excited about it. One of the main purposes of Zumba® is allow you to enjoy the music, so make sure you have a great time and every once in a while that you feel the fat melt away, don’t be shy to scream for joy! Let loose, ask your friends to tag along!
If you’re unable to pick up the steps right away, don’t fret. It normally takes about two to three classes to get comfortable with the movements. Regular practice and consistency is all you need to become a pro!

Maximum Calorie-Burning

  • When exercising, keep your knees bent and the abdominal muscles tight throughout the session
  • Bent knees let you become loose in the hips
  • Engaged abdominal muscles support the spine adequately

People from all age groups can take up Zumba®. Zumba® Gold is a special class that which is particularly targeted towards older individuals and those with physical problems. Even people confined to wheelchairs can workout and stay fit. There is also a special program called Zumbatomic® which is a workout designed for children aged between four and 12 years.
