Vitamin D Levels and the Risk of Diabetes?
Vitamin D is an essential nutrient which plays a major role in maintaining bone and tissue health. Vitamin D strengthens the tissues and also increases the life of tissues. Therefore, it is important to maintain proper levels of Vitamin D. Type 2 diabetes is a type of diabetes which can be treated by changing your lifestyle and eating habits. However, new found research has revealed that low Vitamin D levels can increase the risk of suffering from Type 2 diabetes.
Reduced Chance of Type 2 Diabetes With Presence of Vitamin D
Across to a recent study, including Vitamin D in your diet greatly reduces the risk of suffering from type 2 Diabetes. Anastossios Pittas, Physician at Tuft Medical Center said, “For every 5 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL) increase in vitamin D levels, the risk of developing diabetes dropped by 8%.” The results are encouraging and have gained attention from leading scientists all over the world. American Diabetes Association also reported that individuals who had low Vitamin D levels are at 57 percent higher risk of suffering from Type 2 diabetes.
Both these researches highlight the importance of Vitamin D, optimal Vitamin D levels ensure that we are well guarded against diseases such as Type 2 Diabetes and even cancer. Whereas, Low vitamin D levels increases the risk of Type 2 Diabetes. However, American Diabetes Associated highlighted that people should not start consuming Vitamin D supplements just to protect themselves against Diabetes.
However, it is important to understand why low Vitamin D levels can be dangerous! Low Vitamin D levels increases the body’s resistance for insulin, insulin plays a very important role in regulating blood sugar levels. This means that when you are suffering from Vitamin D deficiency, the body cannot properly regulate blood sugar levels which results in Diabetes. Lead author of the study, Shaum Kabadi said, “Vitamin D insufficiency and obesity are individual risk factors for insulin resistance and diabetes. Our results suggest that the combination of these two factors increases the odds of insulin resistance to an even greater degree than would have been expected based on their individual contributions.”
The study conducted by Shaum Kabadi revealed that an individual who is suffering from Vitamin D deficiency and obesity at the same time is at 32 times more risk of suffering from Type 2 Diabetes as compared a non obese person with regular level of Vitamin D! This research shows how important Vitamin D is for us and how important it is to maintain a healthy diet in order to stay well guarded against diseases.

There are many different reasons why an individual can suffer from Vitamin deficiency this may be because of unhealthy diet or may be due to some disorder or disease that an individual is suffering from.
