Taurine is an amino acid that is widely found in muscle and nerve tissues. It is naturally present in meat, fish and breast milk and it’s commonly available as a dietary supplement. Taurine is even produced by the body.
Is Taurine Bad For Health?
There is little evidence that suggests that Taurine is detrimental to health. It is true that energy drinks may contain high amounts of Taurine; however, the body naturally releases any excess of Taurine in the urine in any case. People who take medication to lower blood cholesterol or anticoagulants should consult their doctor before consuming energy drinks with Taurine. This is because Taurine has displayed the ability to lower cholesterol and act as a blood thinner.

Taurine, on its own, has not been proven to be ‘bad’ for health – but energy drinks are. They provide excessive amounts of sugar, empty calories and caffeine, all of which can lead to severe health consequences. Drinking an energy drink once in a while is understandable, but don’t overdo it. As the old saying goes: “Too much of anything can be poison” – and this is particularly true for these non-nutritious drinks. Hence, try to refrain from energy drinks whenever possible. If you need energy, opt for an apple instead. Chances are you’ll find this more refreshing and energizing than any energy drink.
