Is Organic Produce Really Better for you?
Organic food, long ago, was not common very at all. These days, however it is readily available at most grocery stores. Initially it was designed as a product marketed and targeted towards only those individuals who were highly health conscious and were perpetually concerned with the environmental cause. Buying organic foods surely gives us the deep assurance and satisfaction of consuming healthier alternatives, produced with keeping the mother earth under grave consideration. However, with rising inflation and the shrinking value of the dollar, are the costly organic foods really worth the bills? A good idea would be to be rational with your purchase, which is the way to go in today’s cost infested living, where even a loaf of bread has become expensive! Here are some ways that really make your organic produce worth your while and your money too, and some that just don’t!
PROS of Organic Produce!
Pesticide Prevention!
Most people go for organic produce as it is pesticide free. Pesticides are chemicals sprayed on to crops by farmers in order to protect the crops from insects, bugs, fungi and other kinds of pests, which can ruin the crop and decrease its value. When the farmers use these pesticides, some of the residue is left on the produce consumed by us. People prefer organic produce to reduce exposure to such infiltrated residue. Does this make organic produce better? Well, that is slightly controversial, as whether the produce is organic or nonorganic the usage of pesticide or the residue is below the threshold put forward by the USDA!
Far at Bay from Food Additives!
There are strict laws on organic produce banning it from using food additives used during processing, such as colouring, flavouring, artificial sweeteners, monosodium glutamate and the likes, which end up reducing the efficacy of the produce. Hence, organic foods tend to be healthier this way as they provide for all the nutrients housed by the fruit, vegetable or grain.
Going Green!
Most people don’t just consume organic produce because it is a seemingly healthier option, but also because going organic means going green! By going green we are not referring to the leafy green veggies but the environment! Lesser conventional produce and more organic produce mean lesser usage of pesticide which may subsequently translate into lesser polluted groundwater and soil and rivers that are cleaner off chemicals.
Cons of Organic Produce!
It’s either Veggies or no Veggies!
The fact of the matter is, organic produce or non organic produce, veggies and fruits are veggies and fruits and nothing changes that! Whether you go for the conventionally produced types or organically produced types, you will be attaining the same nutrients, minerals and vitamins. One part to carefully ponder over here is the fact that most research that has been conducted on the health benefits and nutritional profiles of fruits and veggies, has been on conventional produce. And we all are much aware of the benefit they entail, so it is safe to say, as long as you have any kind of fruits and veggies in your diet, you should be sufficiently healthy!
The Pocket Strain!
Organic produce tends to be really pricey. Even though it is much more readily available now than before, and even wal-mart is stocking on it says how mainstream organic produce has become. However, that does not change the fact that it is not heavy on the wallets. Since, research has not been able to give any ground breaking news over the benefits of organic produce; it is okay to skip on it to keep in line with your monthly budget. But, it is not a bad idea to go organic with the ‘dirty dozen’ though. The dirty dozen signifies the 12 fruits and veggies that most of the pesticide usage is directed towards. Even if you have the dirty dozen covered with organic produce, you should be good!
