Healthy Eating for Older Adults
Having good nutrition is essential for humans, regardless of their age. But it is more important for older adults since they are in a very fragile stage of their life. A healthy diet ensures that your body is strong and free from diseases.
The only problem is that not all old people eat everything; they are fussy about what they eat and are not active at all. Healthy eating for adults is very important, although reasoning with them is not easy. You can make an interesting diet plan for them so that they do not feel fussy about following it.
- Eat fruits and vegetables of different colors.
- Consume whole grain products.
- Avoid fats and sugars, but not entirely.
- Eat seafood twice a week.
- Have a variety of proteins; consume different proteins every day.
There are many older adults who live alone. For them, it is advised to buy tin or canned food products since buying fresh foods may be difficult for them. They can also find a grocery store which provides home delivery. Since they have trouble preparing meals, and healthy eating for older adults is a necessity, they shall buy prepared foods which can be made in microwave.
Normally, older adults do not feel hungry at all times, the way kids do. They should try eating smaller amounts of food more often. This will develop a healthy appetite. If they are worried about the cost of foods, they can buy low cost nutritious foods, like dried beans, rice, and pasta. Or buy foods that contain these items, like split pea soup or canned beans.
Some physical activity is also important for adults. Strenuous exercises are not advised because they may run out of breath quickly, but normal walking is advised. It is healthy for them and this way, they will always be active.
Healthy eating involves eating from a wide variety of food groups. All the nutrients can be consumed this way. Healthy eating for adults may involve foods such fruits and vegetables and many fat free dairy products, whole grains such as cereals and many proteins such as beans, chicken fish, lean meat etc. Dairy products may mainly include skimmed milk because this is low in fat and high in calcium. Eggs can be eaten in different forms. This avoids repetition since old people like having new foods to eat. Salt intake should be within a limit since it can cause many pressure related diseases. If alcohol is part of your diet, it is advised to limit your intake on this one too since it is not a healthy option for all.
