What is triticale? Triticale is a hybrid crop species which was produced after cross breeding of Rye and Wheat. The name Triticale is the combination of the scientific names of Rye and Wheat. Scientists started experimenting with crops in the mid 20th century which led to the discovery of this crop. What is triticale? The idea was to introduce a crop that was diseases resistant and of high quality like wheat and hard like Rye. This crop was very famous in the 1960s and almost 250,000 acres were planted, however, over the years the production of Triticale has fallen to only a few thousand acres and most of it is sold as feed grain.
