The Importance of Calcium for Women

All of us women know Calcium is important for us. We also know that we need it for strong bones and teeth and to prevent a so many common diseases occurring in women due to calcium deficiency. While it’s true that both sexes needs calcium, this is more the case with women because of everything a woman’s body goes through throughout her life. A woman’s body sheds blood every month in the form of menstruation, a woman’s body has to go through pregnancy, and after that comes menopause. Because of these reasons the requirement for calcium in women is highly increased.

But how many of truly make sure that we have enough calcium in our bodies? If you do than that’s great, you get a round of applause on Fitness Republic’s behalf. However, unfortunately, majority of the women neglect their bodies need for calcium and therefore are at risk for developing the numerous complications associated with calcium deficiency including osteoporosis.

Here is what Calcium can do for you:

Reduced Risk of Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a medical condition in which the bones become brittle and fragile due to the abnormal loss of bony tissue mainly due to a lack of calcium; most common in postmenopausal women.

It may be unfair, but the harsh reality is that if you're a woman, you have a much higher chance of developing osteoporosis compared to a man. The International Osteoporosis Foundation approximates that osteoporosis happens to an average of 200 million women universally.

Our bones are not lifeless, inanimate objects. They have life in them which stores 99 percent of our body’s calcium.  The explanation for why women are more likely to develop osteoporosis is that their body makes less bone than a man's body does. The Health Services at Columbia believe that women’s bone mass diminishes more rapidly in the course of their lives. The Bone loss in women starts when a woman is 30 and then continues to increase till menopause – till a woman is in her 50’s. The bone loss excels further after menopause.

Receiving sufficient calcium and vitamin D is especially significant for women in the initial few years after menopause – the period when bone mass is lost more speedily. Generally, nutritionists recommend 1000 mg of Calcium daily for women from age 19 to 50 years. Women above 50 require 1200 mg of Calcium daily to maintain their bone mass

High Blood Pressure

Studies reveal a link between high blood pressure and low levels of Calcium. Pregnant women who do not take calcium have a higher risk of developing high blood pressure in the future.

Weight Loss

Studies at multiples universities including, the University of Tennessee, Creighton University in Omaha, and Purdue University showed associations connecting increased calcium ingestion and reduced weight. A researcher describe calcium’s role in metabolic disorders connected to obesity. He also explains that diets rich in calcium can result in the release of a hormone that can make the body’s fat cells lose weight.

Reduced Risk of PMS Symptoms

Quite a few modern studies have displayed a link between calcium intake and lessened levels of pre-menstrual symptoms. A doctor named Susan Thys-Jacobs of St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York discovered a 50 % reduction in the symptoms of PMS in those women who took calcium supplements.

May Reduce Risk of Fatal Diseases and Illnesses

Research shows a connection between calcium and the prevention of colon cancer by the University of North Carolina as well as Cornell University. According to Harvard University it can prevent strokes, and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center believes it plays a role in lowering of LDL (bad) cholesterol
