We often tend to store all our food items in the fridge in the hopes to keep them fresh for as long as possible. While it’s a good idea to store your food in order to increase their lifespan, some foods may actually go bad if stored in the fridge. Here is a list of foods which should not be refrigerated.
You may feel as if the ideal place for your tomatoes is the slide draw in your fridge, however you could not be any more wrong. Tomatoes in fact, do better off outside the fridge than in. When you refrigerate your tomatoes, you are actually causing dire damage as chilling them causes their cell structure to break up and therefore causing a grainy rather than smooth texture of you tomatoes, altering both their taste and texture. So instead of keeping them in the fridge, try putting them in an area away from kettles, ovens and microwaves in order to avoid moisture and heat.
All these above are items that really do not need to be kept in the fridge. This is because these contain a ton of natural preservatives like vinegar and sugar. Therefore these foods are just pointlessly kept in the fridge doing nothing but creating clutter. So out of the fridge and into the cupboard!
Bread is one of those items you should eat fresh and not refrigerate at all. When you refrigerate bread, the chilling causes the starch molecules to move, therefore, causing the formation of starch crystals which make the bread stale, dry and hard in texture. A better idea is to freeze surplus bread. Another bread storage possibility are bread bins. Bread left in bread bins for long periods of time will soon become stale but at a much slower rate than if it were to be in the fridge.
Onions are meant to be stored in a cool, dry and dark environment (much like where they came from) as opposed to often moist environment provided a fridge. Onions are more likely to spoil quicker in the fridge due to the release of gasses from other vegetables nearby.
Potatoes, like onions, thrive in cool, dark and dry conditions as opposed to the fridge. Storing this vegetable in the fridge alters its taste, its color and its overall quality.
Another surprising fact, citrus foods are also one that should not be stored in the fridge. This is because the chill tends to damage and prevent the fruit from ripening and will result in the loss of nutrients and flavor. This makes the fruit turn hard and rough. However, if you store them at room temperature, you will see that your citrus fruits will continue to ripen and will taste delicious.
