The Dukan diet is one of the most popular diet plans in France. What is the Dukan diet? It is a protein based diet designed by a French nutritionist and dietician, Pierre Dukan. Although Dukan has been promoting his diet for over 30 years, its popularity has grown since year 2000. His book “the Dukan diet” is a best seller in France, while selling more than 10 million copies globally. The book has been translated in to 14 languages and published in 32 countries. The “Dukan diet” was first released in the UK, in May 2010, and in the US in April 2011.

How does Dukan Diet Works:

Most diets do help you to lose weight but 95% who diet, gain all the weight back, and they put on more when they return to their older eating habits. The Dukan diet will re design you’re eating habits and help you permanently stabilize your weight.

The Dukan diet does not guarantee extreme results in record time, but if you follow the instructions, you will be able to reach your true weight, that you can maintain for the rest of your life. The diet is based on a list over 100 allowed foods as well as four specific phases.

Attack Phase:

What is the Dukan diet do in this phase? The attack phase is designed to enable dieters to rapidly lose 2-3 kg (4.4 to 6.6 lbs) in 2-7 days by kick starting their metabolism. During this phase you are allowed to eat as much as you want from the list of 68 high protein foods.

Cruise Phase:

What is the Dukan diet do in this phase? The cruise phase is designed to allow you to more gradually achieve the weight they aim for by eating protein rich foods with the addition of 28 specific vegetables. The length of this phase is usually calculated as 1 kg (2.2 lbs) per week but this is based on specific personal conditions. The dieter gradually loses weight by alternating pure protein days and protein + vegetable days. The average length of this phase is based on the schedule of 3 days for each pound you want to lose.

Consolidation Phase:

What is the Dukan diet do in this phase? This phase is designed to help preventing any future massive weight gain. As the body has a tendency to quickly regain lost pounds. This phase prevent the rebound effect by gradually returning to previously forbidden foods and allowing to have 2 “celebrity meals” per week. This phase follows a strict timeline, 5 days per every pound lost in cruise phase. Fruits, breads, cheese and starchy foods are re-introduced into a normal diet.

Stablilization Phase:  

What is the Dukan diet do in this phase? This phase is the rest of your life!! You have learnt how to eat healthy in the previous phases and have developed a pattern to follow. You can eat what ever you want to without gaining weight, by simply following the few non-negotiable rules.

  • Consume 3 tbsp of oat bran per day
  • Choose to take the stairs whenever possible
  • Have a pure protein day once a week, i.e.; attack phase menu.
