The South Beach Diet
The south beach diet plan is designed by a cardiologist Arthur Agatston and dietician Marie Almon, which can be used as an alternative to low-fat approaches such as the Ornish Diet and the Pritikin Diet. The south beach diet foods were advocated in the 1980s by the American Heart Association.
The south beach diet plan restricts carbohydrates. Only “good carbs" are allowed. But people following the south beach dieters must avoid:
- Potatoes
- Fruit
- Bread
- Cereal
- Rice
- Pasta
- Beets
- Carrots
- Corn
These are avoided for the first two weeks. After that, some of these foods remain strongly discouraged by nutritionists. The south beach diet plan avoids unhealthy fats, but strongly promotes healthy ones. It goes for low sugar carbohydrates.
What You Can Eat on the south beach diet
You are never hungry when following the south beach diet recipes. It promotes strategic snacking- there isn’t any counting calories or strict portion sizes. But there's no gorging, either. The main idea is to eat normal portions. For many of us, normal portions will seem small at first, but they are enough to satisfy hunger, not fulfill it entirely.
Carbohydrates rich in sugar are avoided. What are the south beach diet foods? They include:
- Rice
- Potatoes
- Beets
- Corn
Desserts and alcohol are also avoided in the early phase of the diet and limited in the long term diet.
There are three phases in the diet:
- The 14-day induction phase bans bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, baked goods, and fruit. And you can't have even a drop of beer, wine, or other alcohol. The diet shows that after a couple of days, you really won't miss this stuff. As for dairy, two servings of low-fat or non-fat milk, yogurt, or buttermilk are allowed during this phase.
- The "reintroduce the carbs" stage gradually lets us have some of those food products which were avoided earlier. Not all of them, but if you are a pasta maniac, have some. Carrots used to be on the "foods to avoid" list at first, but you can now have them at the beginning of phase two. Tomatoes and onions, previously allowed in a small amount, are now fine in any phase. Fruit can be consumed as well. A little now and then, no more. This lasts until we hit the target set for our weight.
- The final stage is your diet for life. Eat normal foods in normal portions, following a few basic guidelines.
This is all one needs to follow in a South Beach diet. Healthy and limited amounts of food are the best sources and ways to reduce the fat. So still thinking; What is the south beach diet?
