Irritable bowel syndrome (irritable bowel syndrome diet symptoms or spastic colon) is a symptom-based diagnosis characterized by chronic abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating, and alteration of bowel habits. As a functional bowel disorder, this diet symptom has no known organic cause. Diarrhea or constipation may predominate, or they may alternate.

Certain foods, like beans and prunes, can cause gastrointestinal effects in most people.  A certain amount of gas is normal and healthy. However, if you are experiencing abdominal pain, a change in your bowel habits, or if your gas, diarrhea or constipation is interfering with your normal activities, you should see a doctor.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome Diet Symptoms:

It's important for your health care provider to help you rule out other problems, especially if you have any of the following:

  1. Blood or pus in stools
  2. Family history of colon cancer
  3. Celiac disease
  4. Fever
  5. Malnutrition
  6. Symptoms that wake you from sleep
  7. Onset after age 50
  8. A lump you can feel by touch
  9. Unintentional weight loss

The Primary Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome Diet Symptoms are:

  1. Abdominal pain or discomfort
  2. Diarrhea or constipation,
  3. Change in bowel habits
  4. There may also be urgency for bowel movements
  5. A feeling of incomplete evacuation
  6. Bloating or abdominal distention

In some cases, the symptoms are relieved by bowel movements

Some studies indicate that up to 60% of persons withthis diet’s symptoms also have a psychological disorder, typically anxiety or depression. People with irritable bowel syndrome diet symptoms, more commonly than others, have gastro esophageal reflux, symptoms relating to the genitourinary system, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, headache, backache and psychiatric symptoms such as depression and anxiety.
The following is an irritable bowel syndrome diet plan for this diet which will help you in treating the bowel syndrome:

Breakfast:

  1. A bowl of high fiber cereal such as untoasted muesli,
  2. Weetabix or porridge
  3. Fresh or tinned fruit
  4. Reduced fat milk or a calcium fortified soy milk
  5. Whole meal or grain toast with minimal margarine and honey or vegemite
  6. Tea

Lunch:

  1. Sandwiches made with whole meal bread with low fat cheese, lean beef, tinned fish and salad.
  2. Tinned or fresh fruit
  3. Low fat yoghurt
  4. Water, tea or diluted juice

Main Meal:

  1. Water
  2. Lean grilled chicken with lemon juice and pepper
  3. Served with salad
  4. Boil new potatoes
  5. Whole meal bread

Snacks Spread throughout the Day:

  1. Fresh fruit
  2. Low fat yoghurt
  3. Crackers with cheese
  4. Whole meal crumpets with honey
  5. Water, tea or diluted juice
