Full Liquid Diet

A full liquid diet plan is a diet which involves only the consumption of fluids and foods that are normally liquid and those foods which can turn to liquid form when they are at room temperature, like ice cream. The full liquid diet foods also include the consumption of foods like creamy soups, tea, juice, Jell-O, milkshakes, pudding, and popsicles. You cannot eat any sort of solid food if you are on this diet.

The full liquid diet plan has its benefits as well. It is easier to digest as compared to solid foods and it can provide one with the required proteins, fluids, salts, and minerals that may be required for energy. This plan is not difficult to follow at all and one can follow it for a long time. Doctors may provide some supplements to go with it and some people, who have diabetes for instance, should ask their doctors before starting the plan.

There are many reasons why one might follow the full liquid diet plan. You may be asked to follow it before a medical test or procedure, or before certain kinds of surgery. It is important to follow the plan exactly so that you can avoid problems with your procedure or surgery or your test results. Even after the surgery, you are required to be on the full liquid diet plan. If you are having trouble swallowing or chewing, you can follow the plan too.

The following dietary sources are allowed in this full liquid diet plan:

  1. Water
  2. Fruit juices like nectars and juices with pulp
  3. Butter
  4. Margarine
  5. Oil
  6. Cream
  7. Custard
  8. Pudding
  9. Plain ice cream
  10. Frozen yogurt
  11. Sherbet.
  12. Fruit ices and popsicles
  13. Sugar and honey syrups
  14. Soup broth like bouillon, consommé, and strained cream soups
  15. Ginger Ale
  16. Sprite
  17. Gelatin (Jell-O)
  18. Tea or coffee can be consumed with cream or milk and sugar or honey

Here is a sample meal full liquid diet food showing what liquids can be consumed in which quantity and which order:


  1. 1 cup orange juice
  2. 1 cup milk
  3. 1 cup coffee
  4. 1 ounce cream
  5. Honey

A snack may consist of any supplement shake or frozen custard. Supplement shake may consist of some softened ice cream and 2 tablespoons of peanut butter. Once you blend it, it can be a very tasty shake.


  1. 6 ounces strained cream
  2. Any kind of soup
  3. Jelly and whipped cream
  4. 1 cup eggnog or 1 cup tea

Another snack may include some ice cream again, frozen custard, or mashed bananas with some dried milk.


  1. 6 ounces strained cream
  2. 1 cup apple juice
  3. Pudding
  4. Some decaf coffee (1 cup)
  5. Honey

Bedtime Snack can consist of a supplement shake again, consisting of Vanilla Boost plus, pudding, milk, raspberry syrup. This full liquid diet plan can fulfill the required nutrition rate.
