Vision – the ability to see- is something that we should be thankful for at all times. It comes as no surprise that with age, our eyesight weakens. However, that’s not the only damage that may occur to our eyes as the years go by. The reality is, our eyes are vulnerable to more severe conditions with the passage of time. However, lutein and zeaxanthin may be of great help in preventing eye damage.
Lutein and zeaxanthin are two very antioxidants that belong to the carotenoid group. Although these two are yellow in color, they are most commonly found in leafy green vegetables.
The main role of these two antioxidants is to protect our eyes. The retina and lens of the eye are concentrated in only 2 carotenoids; lutein and zeaxanthin respectively. Multiple studies have found that a greater dietary intake of these two greatly reduces the risk of two severe eye conditions which have limited options for prevention; cataracts and age- related macular degeneration. These 2 eyes conditions are the main cause of blindness in individuals over the age of 50. As you may imagine, our eyes are very sensitive (and precious) parts of our body, so sensitive that they are always at risk of damage from free radicals. However, these two carotenoids protect our eyes and vision from weakening with age.
Scientists guess that these two carotenoids are good for our eyes because they have the ability to protect our eyes by filtering out harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun, and because of their strong antioxidant properties.
