How to Keep Almonds Fresh
Almonds are available throughout the year to make a healthy and tasty addition to various sweet and savory dishes. Although packaged almonds are available in stores all year round, they are considered the freshest in mid-summer. That is when they are at the height of their season.
Temperatures and Times:
It is advised to store almonds indoors in a tight shell for around 6 to 8 months. Temperature should not exceed more than 68 degrees Fahrenheit. They can also be refrigerated for 12 months or so. They can be stored once they’ve been slivered or sliced since they do not stay for much long if they are in the whole nut form.
If they are stored properly, almonds shall never become rancid or contaminated at all. Research shows that not only do rancid almonds harm you, but they also have a bitter and highly unpleasant taste. Improper storage methods also allow insects to infest the almonds.
It is advised to store almonds in a cool place and protect it from sunlight. The humidity level should be less than 65 %. In order to have fresh almonds, keep them in a tightly closed container- preferably an airtight one. These containers prevent the infestation of insects.
Fresh almonds grown at home require different and unique preparation before storage. One should be hygiene conscious while dealing with almonds because they require sanitation. Start by drying the newly harvested almonds on a screen. Cover it with another screen to prevent it from being contaminated. Let them dry until you feel the nuts are completely hard. Check this by trying to crack the shells. Then freeze them for around 48 hours at 0 degrees Fahrenheit to kill all insects and bacteria.
