Fitness Faceoff: Batuka VS. Zumba

Readers, we have another battle on our hands – and this time it is between multi-Grammy award winner Kiki Santander’s “Batuka” and renowned dancer and choreographer Beto Perez’s “Zumba”.

Both of these fitness programs are great forms of cardio, work in groups, implement Latin dances and aerobics. So what makes them different? Continue reading to learn more about these two famous programs.

What is Batuka?

Batuka is a fitness and wellness program that was created in 2005 by Kiki Santander. Santander happens to be quite established – after all, he is THE most recognized Latin composer of this day and age and he also happens to be a multi-Grammy Award Winner; Billboard Award Winner; Lo Nuestro Award Winner; Premios TVyNovelas Winner and an  El Heraldo, Winner – to name a few.

Batuka was first released in Spain in July 2005 and became an immediate success; selling over 1.5 Million DVD's in the opening 16 months in Spanish market alone!  This group fitness class moves to the original beats of the talented award winner himself! Yes, Santander composes his own music for the class.

He derived the name ‘Batuka’ from the Brazilian ‘Batucada’ --- a festive and vivacious get-together of people who love to enjoy music, rhythm, and dance.

Batuka also emphasizes on the significance of healthy eating in addition to attaining an optimistic outlook in life, in order to secure the basics of stability and happiness.

What is Zumba?

Zumba is a popular fitness program that came into existence officially in 2001 – it was originated by noted choreographer Alberto “Beto” Perez in Columbia spontaneously as a result of a mishap. Zumba reflects pure Latin style, implementing both Latin dances and music Columbia It combines aerobics with several Latin dances to allow participants to burn calories and to allow them to have fun while doing so. His unique fitness program combines a variety of dances, including the world famous; hip-hop, samba, salsa, merengue, mambo, and some Bollywood and belly dance moves. Additionally, Martial arts, as well as squats and lunges are included.

The Similarities

People who do either Batuka or Zumba Fitness will enjoy the benefits of cardiovascular exercise, and will get to do exercises that engage the large muscles and develops the stamina of the lungs plus the heart. Both Batuka and Zumba highlight fun, facilitating one to have fun at the same time as burning calories. Both of these workouts implement international and Latin music to enthuse participants. Moreover, they use interval training by integrating intense aerobic movement with reduced intense movement to get the most out of the workout and to lose weight fast.

The Distinctions

The chief distinction among Batuka and Zumba Fitness lies is in the music they use. Zumba tends to implement popular and Latin inspired tunes, alongside international songs. Batuka, on the other hand, tends to focus on world music. Sometimes, Batuka classes are conducted amidst a   live band.  Furthermore, some feel that Batuka offers more detailed instruction in contrast to Zumba Fitness.

Also, in advanced Zumba Fitness, people report that the instructor leads with no instruction – you are to begin by mirroring your instructor while dancing to the music. On the other hand, in Batuka, the instructor illustrates the moves before playing the music.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, any form of movement will do you good. As far as following a proper fitness regime, that too, in a group, should work wonders for you. Your personal choice is what actually matters in deciding which one is a better fit for you.
