Need for Speed: How to Increase Your Swimming Speed
Swimming is one of the best sports out there. It uses up every muscle in your body toning it up and increasing your stamina at the same time. Apart from that, there is nothing more refreshing than a brisk swim on a hot day. If you are a beginner at swimming and intend to go professional, there are lots of ways in which you can improve your technique and swimming speed enabling you to be successful in whatever competition you partake. Here are a few basic tips that have been compiled from the general suggestion of all experienced swim coaches regarding what one should do to increase their swimming speed to optimum levels.
Practice
The most important thing in any sport you are aiming to improve at, is constant practice. This increases the endurance in your muscles giving them enough strength to perform at maximum levels during a race. Aim to increase the distance while decreasing the time in your practice so that your body becomes used to high swimming speeds.
Swimming Paddles
These paddles may make training awkward at first but they will prove to be an asset over time. They basically work to ensure that the swimmer enters the water at a good angle after every stroke. This causes the technique of the swimmer to become better. Another advantage of the paddles is that they increased the surface area meeting the water thus increasing the resistance that the swimmer has to work against which increases his upper body strength and eventually, swimming speed.
Tennis Balls
The idea is basically to swim while holding tennis balls in both hands. While his may seem slightly ridiculous, what it does is increased your ability to deal with the pressure e of the water on your hand. Since the swimmer is focusing on gripping the balls, he will also realize the importance of working through the water using his forearms which are often ignored yet are very effective at propelling the body through the water leading to an increase in swimming speed.
Kickboards
The swimmer can hold on to the kickboard while swimming through the water performing the freestyle or dolphin kick. The purpose of this exercise is to isolate the legs and work on the muscles involved in kicking. This causes them to become stronger and thus be able to propel the body faster.
Drills Using One Arm
This involves he swimmer holding one arm out while doing the freestyle stroke with the other arm for the entire length of the pool. Breathing has to be done from the side that is being used to perform the stroke. This not only increases the strength of the arm muscle but it also teaches a swimmer the importance of completing the stroke with each arm in a race as that really increases the swimming speed. Simultaneously with this, the swimmer can also practice holding his breath for longer. This increases lung capacity s that I a race, less time is wasted breathing and swimming speed is increased.
