Tips to Avoid Blisters during Your Workouts

Do your hands chafe when you workout with dumbbells? Or your feet sweat immensely when you are run or jog? Beware! You may get those painful and annoying blisters during your workouts. Blisters, cuts and bruises are those pesky scars that appear during an intense workout routine. They pose an annoying and painful problem that my hinder your workouts. However, blisters tend to be the most recurring problem and heal slowly. Let's see how we can prevent them from happening in the first place.

Tips to Prevent Blisters during Workout

Blisters develop more frequently if your feet and hands are moist. They may hinder your workouts and may turn you off to workout regularly. Take some preventative steps to avoid these painful little devils.

Appropriate Footwear

Avoid the miss-fit. Your footwear is integral to your workout. Ill-fitting shoes may cause blisters to form because your feet may get pinched in odd places. Get an appropriate pair of shoes that is specific to the activity that you are doing and prevent blisters on feet. If you are an avid walker, buy comfy walking shoes and if you are out for jogging, so slip into a decent yet comfy pair of sneakers. Make sure your shoes do not slip off your feet and you should be able to move your toes freely from the toe.

Sock ‘em and Kick Blisters

When buying socks, try to get the ones that are made of polypropylene or other absorbent material. Try to stay away from cotton and wool socks because they aren’t nearly as absorbent. Running causes feet to swell up too so you might want to take an extra, slightly larger pair of running shoes along just in case. Some runners like to layer their socks with a coat of foot powder in between, and so can you. Try this and see if it works for you.

Use Padded Footsteps

Padded insoles help give feet great arch support but it becomes that much harder for feet to adapt to shoes that lack this support. Think of it as a limb in a cast. Even though the cast is supporting the limb, the limb is also weakened by this support and after the cast comes off it’ll take the limb a while to regain complete muscle range of motion and strength.

Powders & Blister Creams

Foot powders help keep your feet dry and absorb some of the sweat and moisture. You could also invest in a foot antiperspirant, with aluminum chloride as an active ingredient. A layer of Vaseline over your feet before you slip them into socks would also help your feet glide smoothly and ease the friction.

Prevent Blisters with Workout Gloves

Dumbbell workouts and weight lifting may also cause blisters to form, so it’s a sane idea to invest in weight-lifting gloves to provide a barrier between the equipment and your hands. Find gloves that fit well and do not chafe, and wick moisture away from your skin so that you won't have the problem developing. Also, go for finger-less gloves to let your hands breathe a bit and to cut down the sweat build-up.

Blisters are formed from chafing and sweating during workouts. Getting blisters during workouts is the most annoying of injuries. They actually hurt. Moreover, they may keep you sidelined when you're trying to train. By taking these preventive measures, however, you can easily avoid those nasty blisters and enjoy any sport to the max!
