Everybody wants a flatter stomach, a stronger core and most importantly better looking abs! You may be in great physical condition but still not have a visible six-pack or flat stomach. Since fat usually accumulates around the mid-section of the body, the abdominal muscles are covered under a layer of fat. You can do a thousand crunches every day but until you lose that belly fat your abs will never show!

The best workout for abs focus on using cardio intensive exercises and a healthy diet that keeps your metabolism steadily running. It is true that you can burn calories by doing just about anything that gets your heart pumping – biking, swimming, dancing and jogging are all great activities you can incorporate. But the best workout for abs is doing cardio based core body exercises. To achieve a quick cardio burst repeat the circuit up to 5 times within 20 minutes.

High Knees

Stand with a complete straight back on the left of an exercise mat. Draw your knees up to chest with each individual step. First step your right foot onto the mat followed by your left foot. Then with the same motion you step off the mat, first with your right foot, then with your left as fast as possible. Continue this for at least 30 seconds.

Mountain Climbers

Lie face down in a straight arm plank position with your hands below your shoulders. From your neck to your ankles, your body should form a straight line. When in the position lift your right foot and bring your knee towards the center of your body. Switch your legs this time raising your left knee towards the center of your body. Keep in mind that you have to keep your hips and shoulders above your wrists. Continue to do as many as possible in 30 seconds.

The Burpee

The Burpee is one of the best workouts for abs but it is an advanced exercise and should be performed with caution. Stand with a complete straight back with your feet hip-width apart. Swing your arms backwards and bend both knees to jump off the ground as high as possible. Land softly and immediately bend your knees and come into a pushup position. Lower your chest to perform a pushup then bend your knees forward to stand and immediately repeat the exercise. Do as my repetitions in 30 seconds as possible.

The Bicycle

The best cardio abs workouts always incorporate the bicycle exercise. Lie flat on your back and keep your hands behind your head. Lift your shoulders off the floor and hold the position. Bring your left knee towards your right elbow then switch sides by bringing you right knee towards your left elbow. Keep the pedaling motion continuous for as long as you can. This exercise targets the internal and external oblique’s specifically the ‘love handles’.

Vertical Leg Crunch

Cross your knees while lying flat on your back and extend your legs into the air. Raise your chat towards your feet by lifting your shoulder of the floor and constrict your abs by contracting them. Lower your chest and legs slowly and then repeat.

Reverse Crunch

While lying on your back keep your hands behind your head and put your legs at a 90 degrees angle. Cross your ankles while curling your hips off the floor and move your feet towards the ceiling by flexing your abdominal muscles. Repeat the exercise as many times as you can within 1 minute.

Things To Keep In Mind

Even the best workouts for abs are made useless unless you maintain a proper and healthy diet. The famous quote “abs are not made in the gym but in the kitchen” does hold true. A good diet plan is essential to get that six-pack you want. Your diet should include fruits, vegetables and protein packed staple foods such as fish, eggs and almonds. Eating 4 – 5 small meals during the day keeps your body full of energy and your metabolism continuously burns extra calories throughout keep you fit and active contributing to the best workout for abs.
