Diet to Prevent Colon Cancer
Preventative measures are always better than curative. Colon cancer usually starts in the form of a polyp, in the colon or rectum and this eventually spreads slowly over a time period of 15 years.
The most powerful tool against colon cancer is constant screening in early stage leads to removal of these polyps; this can measurably reduce the risk of forming colon cancer. Other ways to prevent colon cancer is by controlling your body weight, regularly exercising and your diet.
There is strong evidence that suggests that being overweight greatly increases your risk of colon cancer. Moreover, low levels of physical activity have been linked to the development of this cancer and the occurrence of polyps. Avoid Red Meat and/or Processed Meat
In the United States, people mostly overindulge in red meat and processed meats. However, this is extremely unhealthy, putting aside an increased colon cancer risk. This is because such meats are high in sodium and extremely fatty. This may lead to obesity or being overweight which in turn may cause colorectal cancer. Meats such as; bacon, salami, sausages and other deli meats, are all processed and as such, should be avoided or consumed in a limited amount.
Fruits and Veggies
According to the American Cancer Society, a diet that is high in veggies and fruits and limited amounts of meat is ideal to prevent colorectal cancer.
Make sure to consume a variety of vegetables; and at least five servings daily. Aim to consume 3 portions of fruits daily.
Fiber
A diet that is high in fiber may greatly reduce your risk of developing colorectal cancer. This is because fiber helps eliminate wastes from the digestive tract faster, limiting the contact of toxic wastes with intestinal walls. Try to include whole grain cereals, and breads, brown rice, beans and legumes to ensure your diet contains enough fiber!
Antioxidants
Antioxidants have the ability to fight harmful free radicals, thus preventing the development of several cancers including colorectal cancer. Antioxidants play a very important role in cancer prevention. Antioxidants such as; selenium, beta-carotene and lutein are found in many fruits and vegetables. These antioxidants have a strong protective effect against colon cancer.
Folic Acid
Consuming a diet high in folic acids helps fight against various cancers including colon cancer. This is because folic acid promotes the formation of new cells and tissues in addition to keeping red blood cells healthy. Citrus fruits and green leafy vegetables are particularly good food sources of folic acid.
Phytochemicals
Phytochemicals have been found to be very protective against many types of cancers including colon cancer. These are found in many colorful plant foods like tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, soybeans, berries and citrus fruits.
