5 Tips for Riding with the Peloton
Both watching and working as a part of a peloton is very exciting, however, the job is not as easy as it seems. It requires rigorous training and a lot of hard work. The key is to be physically fit, however, even if you aren’t as physically fit, you can still be part of a peloton group. How? Well here are some simple tips that would enable you to achieve fitness benefits and also aid in hanging with the peloton.
Peloton Cycling Tip # 1 – Arrive Early
As you often hear in different aspects of life; the first impression is the last impression. Your first impression means a lot in a peloton therefore if the group is scheduled to arrive at 10 Am then be there at least five to ten minutes early. You simply cannot expect the peloton to wait for you till you get dressed up and are ready to roll. You should be fully prepared and ready to move out when the group arrives!
Peloton Cycling Tip # 2 – Mutual Cooperation and Understanding
It is possible that you may be physically fit and can outperform anyone in the group; however, trying to show off and getting ahead of the group while riding can be a bad idea. It is advised that you should stick with the group when you join the peloton initially; this is because you are not aware of the routes yet. Allow other more experienced riders of the group to set the course and the pace of the group. Try and be friendly and introduce yourself to the entire group, it can be very beneficial to know the group dynamics as well. Make sure you keep it steady when it is your turn to pull, try and help the entire group.
Peloton Cycling Tip # 3 – Ditch the Music
It is understandable that most of us like to listen to some good music while getting engaged in any form of exercise. But while you are with the group you should ditch the music! Why? Because other riders in the group will often try to communicate you either to guide you or warn you about some upcoming danger, you won’t be able to listen to them properly with the music on. So try and not to listen to music while you ride, since you will end up annoying your group members.
Peloton Cycling Tip # 4 – Pay Attention
Keep in mind, at that point in time, riding and paying attention is what is important. We often tend to ignore where we are going in order to check speed and hear rate. Make sure that you have a clear vision of the entire road ahead, do not just pay attention to the person in front of you. Look everywhere and try to avoid any kind of debris on the road.
Peloton Cycling Tip # 5 – Do Not Ride with Overlapping Wheels
Make sure you maintain proper distance, in order to avoid any kind of injuries; your wheel should not overlap the wheels of any other rider. This does not apply if your group is in echelon formation and fighting crosswind. Overlapping wheels with the person ahead of you increases the risk of colliding and falling when the other person is taking a turn or slows down. Make sure you ride safe! If you keep on overlapping wheels with other people, you will be marked as a dangerous rider and no one would want to ride with you.
